When we’re talking about a good wine, it is good from whatever you drink it, isn’t it? So why excessively formalize it instead of enjoying it’s taste, flavor and experience?
Well, when it comes to wine, the ritual is not a just a show for the audience. The entire process and every step, from opening the bottle, till the first sip will influence the entire tasting. There’s no better place for the “connoisseur” label, which is very well worthed.
If you will try to pour the same wine in three glasses of different shape and thicknesses, you will notice how the taste changes for each of them. You would feel the difference even when it comes to a cheap wine. The finest wine, made up of many subtle notes and flavors, cannot be felt if served from the wrong glass. It will become just a regular wine.

You should also know that the size of the glass matters too, not just the shape! The glass must be large enough to contain 100 ml, which does not represent more than 30% of its total size. It needs a space large enough to let the wine breathe and distribute the aroma evenly. When it comes to the shape, choose those ones that are shaped like a “U”, narrower than a red wine glass, which helps in maintaining a cool temperature.
It is best to serve white wine in glasses of 300 – 350 ml. Do not forget to keep them at a low temperature, but not too cold as in the case of sparkling wines, because you will cancel their entire aroma. A good temparature for white wine would be between 8⁰C and 13⁰C.
We can conclude without a doubt that choosing the right glass is by no means an act of snobbery, but a common sense decision that will always make a difference in savoring your wine.
